Explainer Videos

Explainer Videos can give your viewer a quick “A Ha Moment”: What is an Explainer Video anyway?  Is it kind of like when George W. Bush was The Decider?  Well… not really.  Explainer Videos are SHORT videos that clearly and simply communicate the data your viewer needs to know.

Explainer Videos are everywhere now.  I first saw one years ago on a site that explained how to use Quickbooks.  And because I immediately understood general usage of QuickBooks software (I am neither a software expert nor am I an accounting expert), I thought: this animated-text-icon-video thing is gonna be huge.

Most explainer videos these days seem to be all-animated.  High quality graphic animation and 3D technology  are a lot of fun and we love making them.  But personally, I love seeing human beings in there too; here’s one of a series of Explainer Videos with actual humans that we worked with back when CenturyLink was Qwest after it was US West: See Explainer Video by CenturyLink

Time is critical today as we’re running down the clock on Friday, so let’s cut to the chase.  (I sure wish I had an Explainer Video about Explainer Videos.)

10 things to  know about Explainer Videos:

1. Script is King.  Above all, a good explainer video starts with a good script.  If the words don’t make sense, nothing else will either.  You will have a Confuser Video.

2. You have 5 seconds to capture the attention of the visitor in order to make them want to spend more time on your website.

3. People stay on a webpage with a video two minutes longer than on one with no video.

4. The average explainer video is watched on average for about 2.7 minutes, compared with 28% of website text shown to be read on average.

5. A recent study of 221 students showed that 105 were visual learners,105 were bimodal (meaning no preference), and only 11 were verbal. Explainer Videos take advantage of this by offering visual and verbal cues for learning. This appeals to all three groups.

6. It has been shown that people retain over 50% more information through the use of visual and verbal learning cues.

7. Explainer videos force you to compress your product offering into 60 to 120 seconds and 150 to 300 words.

8. Visitors who view product videos are 64-85% more likely to purchase after watching a video.

9. Online video is 5.33 time more effective than text.

10. Explainer videos can be super-simple.  Here’s one we love by the Explainer Video kings, Google. See explainer videos by Google.
