Videos Make Science Beautiful

Videos capture the miracle of science and inspire a new generation of scientists.

A few weeks ago I met a fascinating woman who is a post-graduate student and biology professor.  When I told her I work in video, she excitedly asked if I’d seen the videos “Life of A Cell.”  No I admitted, but I surmised that it was something I should see.

My new Professor Friend explained that it was a video showing – in 3D animation – the life of a cell.  But rather than talking about it in academic terms that I wouldn’t understand anyway, she talked excitedly about how the videos had changed her life as a science teacher, because of the powerful way it affects her students, many of whom are non-science majors.  Here’s a link to the 3-minute version of  the “Life of A Cell” : Video .

She explained that her process was to show the shorter 3-minute music-video version of “Life of A Cell” at the beginning of the semester.  While students didn’t know much about what they were seeing, they enjoyed the film and paid close attention.  Then, they proceeded to get excited about science.  At the end of the semester, my Professor Friend shows them the longer video of  “Life of A Cell”  with voice-over narration, and then the students understood it.   Check out the narrated version of  “Life of A Cell” video here: Video with Narration .

Rarely do we get to hear about such immediate and transformative behavior resulting from great filmmaking!  (BTW, if you haven’t seen the Ted Talk video with Medical Animation guru and co-founder of this film project, check out David Bolinsky : Visualizing the wonder of a cell .

Another video, you may have seen by now,  basically started as a Medical Device Trial Video.  But it took the world by storm when it captured the indescribable look on the face of a 3-year-old boy who was hearing his father’s voice for the very first time.  How else would such a moment ever be described?   See Video of Grayson hearing his father’s voice.
